Chapter Eighteen
Having chartered a flight to the game reserve in northern Tanzania, a tourist outfit provided us with a vehicle for our âpersonal exploration of the area.â It had all gone smoothly.
Now, we were driving north to Uganda.
It was hard to imagine that I was married to one man until a few days ago, and now, I was heading to meet Grandmother Sybil for the first time. There, we would have a unity ceremony that would tie me to Striker, as it should be, and I would be married to two different men in the same week.
Life was a whirlwind.
And while it seemed that the universe heaved to make everything happen in quick succession. There was that whisper in the back of my mind, as if an old memory, a past thought, âBirds of a feather flock together.â It was the one I had been chanting when I left Langley and ran into the FBI Joint Task Force and John Green.
Interestingly, while that rhyme hummed along behind me, I had another one that swirled in front of me, too, in a sort of harmonious duet of childrenâs verses.
I couldnât imagine what either could mean.
Hopefully, Grandmother Sybil would.
Doc said that before Grandmother Sybil would unite Striker and me, we would discuss my psychic health and do what needed to be done. Iâd have to make a decision in everyoneâs best interest. Right now, I tried very hard not to ponder the question or have an opinion.
The last time I had psychic surgery, I floated away into nothingness.
And I liked it there.
I would have stayed in that floating warm bliss if I hadnât sensed Strikerâs voice calling me back to him. Yes, Iâd leave bliss to find my way back into Strikerâs arms.
When I met Grandmother Sybil in the ether for the first time, when she used me as a conduit to save Strikerâs family, that whisper at the back of my head felt a little like that.
At least in the sense of being caught up in something bigger than I was.
It was hard to imagine any of that being at play here as we drove past the expansive Tanzanian vistas with flocks of birds and grazing wild herds.
This whole area seemed incredibly peaceful.
While Grandmother Sybil is one of the people I feel closest to in this world, Iâve never seen her in reality. Never spoken with her. Iâve sent letters. Doc has visited several times to learn from Grandmother Sybilâs vast expertise in the ether.
Striker, of course, knew her and had visited over the years.
That last trip, Doc accompanied Striker as they took solar panels, lanterns, and electric camping stoves. He rented a digger and put in a well, saving the women long walks to the water and dangerous hikes into the surrounding forests to gather firewood. They were gratitude gifts.
But I was unable to go.
Honestly, I didnât strive to be on that plane with Doc and Striker.
I appreciated my relationship with Grandmother Sybil in the ether. Corporeal would be different. Meeting her and her tribeswomen in the flesh would change everything.
